Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect during the evaluation process?

The very first step in determining your dog's needs as well as your specific requests is the free evaluation.  Upon contacting Southern K9 Institute, your evaluation will be scheduled to take place at a central location.  This allows our Trainer to hear about your dog's personality, issues you are experiencing, and how your family and dog interact together.  The Trainer will then be able to make an educated decision on what training program would best suit the needs of your dog and family.  Ultimately, the decision is up to you.  The Trainer will talk to you about the different training techniques that would be appropriate for your specific situation.  The Trainer may request in advance that your dog be present at the evaluation.  The Trainer will document the Evaluation for future reference to be sure all your needs are met.  If you wish, a demonstration dog can be present on-leash for you to see obedience in action.  If so desired, a schedule for training can be determined at the evaluation or at a later date.

How much does training cost?

Each training program varies in cost depending on the length of the program, the materials needed, and the specific needs of your dog.  Each training program is designed in a way that can be adjusted to meet the needs of your dog.  Costs for training are outlined on previous pages and can be used as a guideline.  At your evaluation, the Trainer will discuss which program is suitable for your dog and the costs that are involved.  Rest assured, your dog will be receiving the highest quality training available with each program.

For your convenience, we now offer PayPal as a safe and secure way to pay for your dog's training. This allows you to use any debit or credit card you wish by syncing it with your free PayPal account.  A 3% fee will be added to the cost of the program your dog is completing to cover the fee that PayPal requires. (Example: If your dog's program costs $495, you will submit a payment for $509.85 via PayPal). PayPal payments can be made to lauren@southernk9.com.  Cash and check are also accepted with no additional fee.

  • PAYMENT POLICY (Effective June 1, 2013)
We now require payment in full on the first date of service.  We no longer accept payment half up front and half at         completion due to circumstances beyond our control.  Additionally, payments made by check will be deposited on        the first date of service. If check shows insufficient funds, client must pay the bank's insufficient funds fee and               training will not begin until full payment is received by either cash or PayPal.  We sincerely apologize for the                 inconvenience to our loyal clients and thank you for your understanding and compliance with this updated policy.

How can I cope while my dog is away at training?

At Southern K9 Institute, we understand that it is difficult to say goodbye to your canine companion while they are away for training.  However, we believe that it is the BEST way to achieve the success you desire.  Staying with the Trainer during the various programs will ensure that your dog will completely understand the expectations set forth.  During your dog's stay at Southern K9 Institute, the Trainer will keep in contact with you so that you know how your dog is progressing.  The Trainer will also update our Facebook page to keep you informed and will include pictures and video when applicable.  Although we know you'd like to visit with your dog at some point during his or her training, we strongly discourage that.  This gives your canine an emotional and behavioral set-back during their program and keeps them from completing their program on time.  Southern K9 Institute is diligent in keeping families informed and updated regularly.

What can I expect when my dog returns from training?

Each dog will react differently when returning home from training.  However, it can be expected that your dog will be very excited to come home!  With that excitement, many times the dog will remember old behaviors that were previously tolerated in your home.  There is generally a phase where your dog will test his or her limits to see what will be allowed.  The training your canine has received will only be as successful as you make it to be.  Your dog will know all of his or her commands, but it is your responsibility to maintain their skills and show them that you expect the same things as the Trainer expects.  Your Trainer will follow up with you and help you along with any struggles or new situations.  It is our goal for you to be satisfied with your dog's training as well as for your dog to be completely confident in his or her new lifestyle.
